An independent medical examination (IME) occurs when a doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor, psychologist, or neuropsychologist who has not previously been involved in a person’s care examines an individual. There is no doctor / therapist-patient relationship. IMEs may be conducted to determine the cause, extent and medical treatment of an injury where liability is at issue; whether an individual has reached maximum benefit from treatment; and whether any permanent impairment remains after treatment. Our team can help assist with independent medical exams or with expert witness testimony. We dive a little more into each of those aspects below.

Independent Medical Exams

Through the course of an insurance or disability claim, the insurance company is going to require that any injuries are medically documented. A person cannot just say that their neck or back hurts. There’s going to have to be verified medical evidence that an injury has occurred. Independent medical examiners are impartial physicians who may provide forensic medical reviews, independent medical exams (IMEs), or impartial examinations, which allow them to evaluate the extent of injuries, disability, or physical impairment for insurance carriers and defense counsel.

Expert Witness Testimony

Individuals with professional experience in a certain field are considered “expert witnesses” in those fields, which makes our team expert witnesses in the field of orthopedic care. We can serve as expert witnesses to provide expert reports regarding injuries, impairments, and disabilities. Every state has different laws when it comes to Worker’s Compensation and no-fault claims and every insurance company works differently. We are flexible and can put our expertise to work for you.
